Report on the 1st Asian Congress of Medical and Care Facilities

The 1st Asian Congress of Medical and Care Facilities was held on March 13 and 14, 2010, at the Kyoto International Conference Center. The Congress encompassed a comprehensive range of medical topics in addition to acute care, with the aim of looking squarely at the current situation in Japan, which already ranks as a “super-aged society”, and other Asian countries that are rapidly approaching the same status, and deepening the awareness of problems faced in common. This was the first such international congress to be held in the field of long-term medical care.

The Congress was launched with an opening ceremony attended by Her Imperial Highness Princess Takamadonomiya, and was a thriving success, with approximately 1,600 attendees from 11 countries. Speakers from various countries gave presentations on a broad range of topics, generating lively exchanges of opinions. Overall, the Congress presented an opportunity to focus on efforts to improve the quality of long-term medical care. Discussions were conducted among the various participating countries, and among hospitals and facilities, with valuable information being taken back to be applied in providing enhanced medical treatment and care.

Based on this first step in broadening the fine-quality long-term care available in Japan to the global stage, the Korean Association of Medical Care and Facilities and other Asian countries and cooperating organizations will continue working to expand and develop long-term medical care. We look forward to the continued support of all of those in the field.
